How much "jumping off" room do chickens need?

I'm adding new roosts and trying to figure out how to position them so that the hens don't dive-bomb their feeder and waterer. If there is a ladder, will the hens use it or is their preference for jumping down?

my hens just jump down...

Mine do both. If they're not to impatient, they use the ladder. I've seen all 8 use the ladder, but if one gets part way up and stops, then they jump up. It's all in their mood.
