How much Penicillin G for a chicken?

How are you doing with the Bumblefoot? Here is what we've been doing for our RIR rooster, Woody. In May, 2012, we noticed him slightly limping one day, the next day I scooped him up and we examined the foot and there was a black spot on the pad about the size of a pencil eraser. My DH said "that's bumblefoot". I did some research; see BYC thread called "Vet suggestion for non-invasive bumblefoot cure". Specifically post # 95, 107, 115, 124-127 & 140 of 228. I ordered Tricide Neo from Koi Acres because I could not find iny locally (Houston). So, in the mean time, we took him to the Vet. $252.00 later, we returned home with Orbax oral for the infection (cannot be purchased without a prescription), Betadine solution (large bottle @ Walgreens $20) for soaking his foot every other day in addition to a 10-15 minute soak in epsom salts, Metacam (oral) for pain that we never used and Silver Sulfadiazine cream (Aspercream) to smear on the spot daily. The Vet could not confirm that it was Bumblefoot. She examined the spot and removed some liquid from his toe knuckle which was swollen. She said it may be early bumblefoot. So we did this according to Vet instructions for about a week. I used 3" self adhering elastic bandage (vet wrap) to wrap his foot & toes. (see How to Treat Chicken Foot Sores on www.dummies.com) We saw no improvements. In the meantime, Woody turns up with a missing back toe nail and scabs on his other foot! By this time, the Tricide Neo had arrived. I used 1 1/4 tsp in 4 cups of distilled water. I soaked both feet. I smeard triple antibiotic cream & prep H on the swolen knuckle & black spot. I found that the ceramic insert out of a crock pot worked best for the soaking as it is harder for rooster to tip over and harder for him to get out.The day after his first soak, I unwrapped his foot and the black spot was gone! It has not returned but the swelling had increased inthe knuckle. A toe is much harder to wrap! I'd taken an upholstry needle and stuck him a couple times to try and get the infection out but only a little bloody liquid would come out. Last week, I purchased an exacto knife from Hobby Lobby and cut deep into the knuckle and across the area about 1/4". Out popped the bumblefoot kernal nearly the size of a piece of hominy. Yuck! I am amazed that Woddy doesn't seem to be in pain with all of this. I soaked him again & put triple antibiotic on the cut & rebandaged it. I have been soaking and bandaging the foot every couple of days for about 6 weeks now. A couple days ago another much smaller kernal came out of the knuckle again. His other foot where the toenail was busted off is beginning to swell now and he is limping on it a little. Today, we decided to amp up our doctoring on Woody. We injected 1/2 cc penicillin in his breast meat using a 25 gauge needle. He weighs 4 lbs. These syringes & needles are quite cheap from Walgreens. He didn't flinch from the injection. I soaked & bandaged both feet. We will continue this treatment, daily for the next 7 days. I found tubular gauze with finger cots at Walgreens today and will try those on Woody's back toe since that digit is very hard to bandage. I've mostly used bandaids & vet wrap strips. I will keep you posted as to what happens. I would love to have a pair of the Nettie duck shoes that everyone talks about but it appears they are no longer available. Woody runs free range with his hens and roosts with them at night. He loves to get as high as he can and so we are going to have to make some changes in the coop. This is our first experience with Bumblefoot. We are in our 4th year with this flock.

Aspercreme is not Silver Sulfadiazene (Thermazene). It's Trolamine Salicylate, more of an aspirin product. Thermazene cream is what they put on burn victims and also it is what I use for bumblefoot and is antibacterial and anti-fungal. Aspercreme will not do the same thing as Thermazene.

I've never found antibiotics of any real use for bumblefoot. Getting the solid infection out, packing with antibiotic ointment and wrapping it works just as well. A 22 gauge needle works for penicillin, no larger. Not sure how you'd get it through anything any smaller, though. It can be thick. You get needles and syringes at the feed store.

Thermazene cream, given to me by a friend who worked at a Nature Center. They used it with raptors with bumblefoot. You practically must have a prescription for this stuff.
