How Much Room?

But varmints are real things! Critters who are bothersome pests. And vermin are a particularly nasty little varmint, I’d say. According to Merriam-Webster, too.

“Varmint” is a corrupted form of “vermin” and is considered slang. So not really a proper word, and regional to parts of the US. It made it into the dictionary through sheer use... like “ginormous” and “selfie”. I thought this was all a joke until I just looked it up and sure enough, somebody decided to immortalize this bastardization in the actual dictionary  English is weird.

“Varmint” is a country word. People have been shooting varmints that come after their chickens since long before anyone heard of a ginormous selfie. “Varmint” dates back to the 1500s.

How do you think all the other (fancy) words got into the dictionary? Pretty much the same way. Sheer use.

... my personal favorite - "varminT". Now that's somethin'! (it's not even phonetic.. unless you're going for a French-style silent T or something )

[Apologies to OP for aiding and abetting a thread hijack.]

I believe "varmint" (hard "T") is a real word (at least many dictionaries say so) and in some instances (applied to nasty people) is one that I myself use. Perhaps archaic (?) but real.

At what stage do you plan on selling them?
Once they are off heat?
Once they are sexable...many could be at 6 weeks(but I see silkies in your avatar)?
What's your marketing plan?

Thanks to the extreme Texas summer, I don’t have to worry about keeping heat on my birds, I have to worry about them over heating. I supply a feed store located right off of Interstate 35 and receive requests for birds of all ages. Ideally though, I will try and sell most of them at 4-4 1/2 months of age. I also sell birds online and have done very well with it. I usually sell between 25 and 30 of them at 3-4 weeks old to people looking for chicks, but as I mentioned; I try to sell them as pullets. I have 24 different variety’s of chickens.

Wow. I wish I still lived in TX (and I never ever ever thought I'd say that!). I want some Jersey Giants and d'Uccles and Wyandottes and Partridge Cochins and Splash Marans and and and...thank goodness you're far away or I would be having serious chicken math issues! ;-)

Sounds like a great business endeavor though. Best of luck!
