Hey all,

Since we are new to having backyard chickens (Rhode Island Reds). How much should we be feeding them each day? We have 29 chickens total now...how much per chicken should we be giving them. Thanks for all your help!

THey should have free choice feed, all the time. If they are layers, they should also have free-choice oyster shell (assuming they are over 18 weeks old). Enjoy your birds!!!

Free feed. however much they'll eat, available at all times- even if they free range.

UNLESS you're raising cornish or cornish X's. They should only have access to free feed 12 hours out of the day after a certain age.

I free range, but still keep their feeder full or nearly full.

We had a horrendous mouse problem recently and are now feeding daily instead of free feeding. About 1/4 - 1/3 pund of feed per bird per day seems to work well for us.

It's a shame there's not some way you could convince your chooks that mice are delicious. End of mouse problem. I have a sparrow that lives with my chickens, believe it or not. He/she sleeps in the coop, forages with my chickens, the other day I even found him dustbathing under the coop with the flock! Thankfully he doesn't eat much.
