How much space do my chickens need?

Hi,

I have four silkie chickens. The current area for them is 155 in. long, 48 in. deep and 65 in. tall. There is also a run attached to the coop that is 288 in. long and 48in. deep. We would like to minimize the space our chickens take up, but not cramp them either. Math is seriously not my strong suit, so I can even figure out how many square feet this is.

Thanks,

Sorry - that should say I CAN'T even figure out the square footage.

There are 12" in a foot. So take your inch measurements and divide them by 12.

Your coop:

155" / 12 = 12.9 feet, which we will round up to 13 feet for easier math.
48" / 12 = 4 feet.

To get square footage, just multiply your width and depth.

Your coop is 13' x 4' = 52 square feet.

Your run:

288" / 12 = 24 feet
48" / 12 = 4 feet

Your run is 24' x 4' = 96 square feet.

Your four birds have plenty of space. You can look at this thread to see what is recommended: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/869901/how-many-chickens
