I'm going to have my first ever hatch in 10 days and I am going to start building a brooder this weekend.

How much space per chick should I allow?

For the first three weeks or so, 1/2 square foot per chick is enough. After that, they need about 1 square foot each until they feather out. More room is always better.

I don't know your situation. I had my brooder in the coop for my first chicks. After four weeks, I removed the brooder and kept the chicks in the coop, so I had plenty of room. This was during warmer weather so my situation was different from yours. I had no adults birds around, I had electricity in my coop, and the floor of my coop was very draft proof.

    Good luck!
