Straw prices are low in central NY, and I want to buy enough to last me through the winter. I have 8 largish breed chickens in a 8x6 coop, anyone have an estimate as to how many 40lbs bales should last me from novemberish through aprilish?
  2. If you can keep it dry, having more than you need won't hurt you. My straw loft can hold 9 bales, the larger 70 pound bales. I like to fill it this time of year. You may only go through 4 bales, but again, why not take advantage of the current price? If you burning gas to go get 4 bales and your trailer will hold 8? Get 8.

    Best regards,

My coop is 9x5 for the chickens and 4x6 for the ducks, and I go through 2 40lb bales a month. But most of it goes to the ducks, I use less than half for the chickens.
