how much to feed layers?

I honestly believe I'd sacrifice a few meals for myself so they could have feed in front of them 24-7, if it came to that.

I wouldn't have to sacrifice a meal to do it. I have a 50 pound bag of whole oats in the garage. I'm sure they'd cook up in the crockpot.

Seriously, though, I agree. I like my animals to eat well. If that meant beans & oatmeal for me, then I'd be happy to eat those more.

I'm with'ya on that. I've had a feeder go empty every once in a blue moon (which means they didn't have feed for maybe a half day or so), and the second the feed hit the bottom, they dove into it like they haven't eaten in a week! That doesn't happen very often, though. But it goes to show you that even though they don't eat much as they pass by the feeder, they're used to just "topping off" every little bit, as opposed to "being fed" on a daily ritual.

I feed mine every 2 days. This means that they have a full-ish feeder on day 1, a half-full feeder morning of day 2, and an empty (maybe some 'dust' in it) feeder on the morning of day 3. They act like they've not eaten in a week when I give it to them, growling and arguing with the others in the pen.

Mine have had a few times where their jars were empty when I went out there, too. All I can say is that it's a good thing I don't bear a resemblance to GB crumbles...

It's unbelievable how they push and shove. Now, you have to remember that the most birds I have in any single pen at this time (other than the brooder) is 4. So, it's not like they NEED to push and shove. There is plenty of room at the buffet table for all.

Nevertheless, they start fighting like there is only space for one...

That's how mine are too, there are at least 40 feed 'holes' between the 2 feeders, probably more. I have 25 birds in that pen and they all want to eat out of the same hole
