How much to feed???

Be careful about listening to feed store "experts". A local store sold my DBF scratch to feed our (then) month-old chicks. I got them back on chick starter as soon as I realized that they were just eating scratch.

Thank you all again for the info. I got them some chick starter today and I guess I can just keep the layer feed for when they are older? I still have half the bag which is in a rubbermaid container to keep it fresh. Is there anything I should stay away from giving them at this age as far as fruits and veggies go?
I had a couple handfuls of blueberrys that were going bad that I gave them this morning and they ate them all up! Seemed to love those! :)

You can pretty much give them anything to eat just remember that they need to have access to grit if they are eating anything other than feed and yogurt. Unless they are outside on the dirt, then they get the grit they need from that.

This is too funny...

I've been reading hundreds of posts to the forums and until today I thought "layer feed" meant "feed that is in layers" rather than "feed you give to layers (chickens)"

Like layer cake.

As long as the feed is in the sealed container it should be fine until the ladies are ready for it.

We feed our entire adult flock layer feed, with oats, wheat and sunflower seeds. The roo eats what is provided, but how much of the layer feed he is actually eating I couldn't say. Our flock forages our acreage, so possibly he eats more layer feed in winter (when we are snow covered) than the rest of the year. He seems pretty healthy.
