How much would two geese eat?!

Howbmuch would a pair of geese eat a day? Is it REALLY a pound a day?

or is it half a pound a day?

All my critters (ducks and chickens) free range during the days. And the reason she will onlh let me have two is cause she HATES geese. Im happy im getting two

Well I said that one time too, there was a time when I said I would never have any nasty, loud, stinking geese until a friend had some to get rid of and I got them and loved them, so maybe your mom will too.

But if they will be ranging, then that's were they will get most of their feed from because they are heavy grazers. What did your dad ever decide about geese ? Wasn't he getting some ? Couldn't you send your extras to his pond ?

Hes actually getting the same breed as me, but hes getting goslings. And I dont want any of my birds over there. He will just end up selling them and telling me they ran away. (he lies alot) and dont worry, he doesnf check out this sight

If you are going to free range them you really don't need to offer any feed. If you are fattening a goose it is a good idea to offer some feed.

That being said I offer my 4 geese two cottage cheese containers full of flock raiser every morning. They do wander over to the goats pan and help themselves throughout the day but they are just being greedy.

I am not fattening my geese but I offer grain because as soon as they hear or see me coming they run to me from the pond for breakfast. Soooo awesome to have the geese honk in appreciation of what I do for them. They are very noisy buggers when they are getting breakfast.

I think your mom is going to love them. They do poop a lot but I take a corn broom and a litter pan and sweep up and compost the waste. If you garden your mom may want the compost.

I am very excited for spring. I hope there are many goslings hatched.

I was talking to William & Katherine and Fork and Spoon this morning telling them that they had better be ready to get down to business.

Also Pilgrims are not as aggressive as other breeds. When they are laying eggs of course they are very aggressive but that's only a few months of the year. I can pick them up if I wanted right now and I've only had them since October. They recognize the treat dispenser right away.

From the summer till now at time's I've gone weeks with no grain at all, just 100% grass, but you have to be careful that they have PLENTY OF IT, because they eat like nothing! One goose might be able to cover anywhere from 60-150 square feet a day if they are confined in movable pens (as in graze it too the ground), though it depends on how tall your grass is, how much room they have, etc.. If they free-range they will probably go through about the same amount of grass, just not concentrated in a particular area. But as far as grain goes they do eat a lot. Just make sure they always have water. If they run out they will really slow down on eating, which isn't good. You won't regret geese!

I am going to read up and make sure I get fertile eggs, so far it sounds good. From what I have read they do best mating in water deep enough to submerge and in as natural habitat as possible. The pond is 8 feet deep. Also these geese have been mating 4 years so they should know how it's done

I budget 1/2 pound per goose per day. I put out half in the AM and half in the PM. Young geese will eat all of it. When the goslings are gone and it is just the mature adults, they often won't finish it. If they haven't eaten their last meal, I skip one feeding. I don't like leaving grain out for the wildlife.

If they have tender young grass to eat, they won't eat their grain. Grass is their preferred food. It can't be old stringy grass, but if they have access to the grass, they will keep it trimmed and new grass growing.

If I've got it, I give them fruit or greens every day. I grow snow peas for them. They eat the entire plant (I get the pea pods, they get the rest of the plant).

It's surprising, but a large (adult) goose doesn't eat much more than a large duck. The goslings need good food while they are growing. They gain a huge amount of size in a very short time.
