How Much?...You've got to be Crazy!!

our feed store is great, been family owned for a 100 years. very hard working and nice people. i get a bail of shaveings for 6 dolars and my 50 pound bag of layer pellets for 11 and change

Due to the weird weather we have had this spring and non exsistant summer.
I was told to expect grain, feed hay, shavings etc to increase by 30 % by fall.
Crop failure, hay failure to grow in the States that got too much rain and the States that go little to no rain.
Its going to be an expensive winter.( from what I have been told by the feed stores).

To get feed of any kind for a decent price we would have to go on a 2 hour drive every 10 weeks and stock up. Even adding the fuel cost it still worked out cheaper than if we bought locally. I'm happy to say that one of the local stores has offered to match the others prices and deliver it to our door.

Our issue is that we have chicks, quail, peacocks, ducks, laying hens all running around the yard and they all need a slightly different mix of protein and other minerals. We end up mixing several different types of feed in the open feeders. The highest is the 26% protein for the peacocks at $15 per bag. Our plan is to plant a few acres in grain and let them range over that area.

I live in a very small community in Northern Indiana...we literally have a feedmill within walking distance. I buy my dog & chick feed there - pay around $10/50 lb. bag of medicated chick starter & $15/50 lb. for high protein maintenance dog food (we breed & raise German Shorthaired Pointers).

I buy my pine shavings at Big R - it runs right around $6/50 lb. bag...a VERY compacted 50# bag!! LOL! I had to order PermaGuard (sp?) online - we are a HUGE agriculture area - do you think I could find some local? Heck no! LOL! But we used it along with road dust, fireplace ash & playsand to make a sandbox for the chicks to roll in. Works great & the chicks love it!!

$6 - $7 for Shavings, $6 - $7 Scratch, $11 - 12 Layer feed, and Small bag of Chick feed, $7

I also buy Straw, $3 a bale.

I buy the Equine pelleted bedding for my chicks for $6.59 for a 50# bag. I like it better than the woodshavings because it absorbs better without turning all gross. Easier to clean out, IMO, too.

We pay $7.50/ 50# cracked corn, $8.75/ 50# scratch grains (I mix for the ducks), $14/ 50# pelleted duck/gamebird feed, $13.95/ 50# flock raiser.

DE is $13/ 50# at the local drive through.

$8.95/ 25# bag of black oil sunflower seeds and $19.99/ 50# rolled oats. (I mix these two with the flock raiser for the chickens).

$9.95/ 50# oyster shell and $6.50/ 50# grit.
