How often do you clean out your run and coop?

I clean my coop out every week and a half. Then I just broom out the run since most of it is just concrete blocks.

My run origionally had a concrete block floor but I took out the middle ones so that the girls could get to the dirt to sand bathe.

They have a bigger run right now that has grass in it. (Not for long!)

Cody!!

I just started my flock, I use the DCM and add one bag of shavings a week, and I stir everything up every other day. I clean the waterers every other day, and feed every day. I have 12 babies. I plan on doing an entire coop clean twice a year. My coop is 12 x 12 with an outdoor fenced run.

My 8' X 12' Coop is over 15 years old on a self built brick foundation that has a dirt floor 12 to 18 inches below ground level. I only clean out the builtup deep litter in the spring----thats because I want the compost fertilizer for my garden. After I scoop it out in the spring, I add all summer clippings, pine needles/cones, wood chips as I get them. I may turn the mulch over if I see it getting packed down with a spading fork or I may just throw in some scratch and let the chickens do it. The water is from the rain collected off the roof into a stock tank with a few goldfish in it to prevent skeeters. Moss and algae in the water just adds flavor for the chickens.

I keep a trash bag lined muck bucket in the chicken house and when I go to let them out in the morning, I just scoop up all the "big" droppings (while I'm there). I also just heard of the DE & DLM so I'm gonna' try it for the larger area of the floors. Of course, they stay out most of the day in a run I just got finished fencing in an area of 75'x40' so I hope I don't have to "clean" that? Most of it is still grassy too.
I wanted to add something about fly control.... because I previously had a horse, I used the fly predators and so when I got a reminder this year about getting them in the mail again, I decided to try it for the chicken coop as well because I WAS noticing the flies! It costs me $20 a month but I think it works because I don't notice them anymore!
Any body else...?

We're kinda new at it and I'm thinking we want to do a deep litter method for this winter coming. I don't put anything on the floor (6x8 sq 6 birds) but pine shavings. I clean the roosts and "poop board" about every 3-4 days. They have a huge run, maybe 1200 sq ft, all grass, fence enclosed, and spend a lot of time outside, so, most of what needs cleaning is the board. Hay in the nest boxes, no eggs yet, they're too young, but they sleep in them once in a while for "nap time".

One of the great things about this forum is that we can see so many different perspectives. I love this thread. We can see that clean/bleach works as does about once a year and scrape out the moss. It is great to be reminded that there is not one true way and many ways get the job done.

I particularly liked this idea, rainwater goldfish and skeeters....but what are skeeters?

I have read on other posts that it is not a good idea for the hens to sleep in the nesting boxes and you should discourage it. One the eggs will get poo on them when they start laying and they need to learn to sleep on the roost. Do a search for articles related to this for more information from the real experts.
