How often should I change the nest box bedding?

my nesting area uses an astroturf type platic door mat. When it gets dirty, I hose it off, shake it a few times to get most of the water off then place it right back in action. It takes all of 3 minutes to clean the nesting area.

I use straw and replace it when it gets dirty--biggest problem is if an egg gets broken--don't want to leave that in there lest it start egg eating.

I lined each of my 6 nest boxes with a piece of heavy cardboard, then make a nice fluffy nest with shredded newspapers I get from my inlaws. Cheap, fast to clean out if needed, and the chickens absolutely love to play with the long strands of paper.
Mine tend to all use 3 or 4 of the boxes, but it's never the same ones every day. Seems like it's a popularity thing.... "ohhh, she's using this nestbox, so it must be the best one!"... or maybe "mmm, she got it all warm for me

.They have 3 12 ft roost and I think they ALLLLL roost in the boxes.I have 14 hen's and 3 roo's among 15 boxes.I wonder how 3 or 4 of those fattie's can poop so much in one box!I bought a pair of rubber gloves and have already cleaned twice and its been a couple week's I just left the Huge bag of shavings up there.Gotta clean them again. They have been free ranging days so far so just the night roosting they are Super poo machine's.

. Although MOST of the hen's have been picking a couple of the lower boxes for egg's still a couple lay in the roosty ones and I have to scrub those egg's!
