How old before if I can tell if my chickens are roosters or hens?

May I suggest posting a picture here before you give up on your bird? I have occasionally have hens in any given group mature faster then the others and make me think they might be roo's.
 
I'm new to this, can you tell me how I post a pic. But this chicken looks like other chickens I've seen on the internet called Plymouth Rock.
 
Rocks fit the description of an easy to distinguish male for female at an early age.
As I stated in my response early on, the features of the male show early.

Here are a male and female Barred Rock at 8 weeks. Easy to see, no?

Here's a trio I have right now. Again, very easy to distinguish.






It is not so different than developing the "eye" to notice the differences in males and females of other birds, such as distinguishing between male and female robins or cardinals.

Hi robjacmom. I joined this site because as you can see by the responses of everyone, not only is everyone helpful here, but also very nice. I am fairly new to this site as well and haven't posted recently. I have 6 hens as well. they aren't laying yet, but I hope they will start soon. I also am new at this and love my birds. Unfortunately at the beginning of august while my hens were out, a fox got one of mine and tore the feathers off the back of another before we were able to run him off. I thought I was being good getting them in before dusk. I didn't realize the first week of august the fox kits, now grown, come out during the day, unlike the older fox. Well, I don't mean to go off subject, but ever since that fox pulled the back feathers out of one of my hens, I have noticed she has been slowly getting much louder than the other hens and has grown deep red waddles and comb. I was curious if perhaps she has taken on rooster tendencies. I checked all of the chicks pin feathers when I got them and they all appeared to be females. I was reading freds hens post and she has the body type of a hen being close to the ground, or at least she did, now I'm not so sure. because they aren't laying yet I was wondering how to tell too. I am glad you made this post so I can maybe get help figuring it out too! Like one of your responses noted, don't give your possible rooster away just yet, it could still be a hen. I read sometimes a hen takes on rooster tendencies when either they had been sick, stressed or there aren't any roosters in the flock. Maybe someone here can tell me if that is correct.

Hi all, I'm new to the site and have'a micro flock of three birds (Ameracauna, Cuckoo and Rhode Island Red). I was wondering if you can tell from this pic if any of the three is a Roo.

Greetings from Texas! We have a peep that is now about 18-20 weeks old, and we're still not sure of "her" gender. Her mom is an Easter Egger and daddy is a Buff Orpington. She is tall with long legs, tiny comb & no wattle. She has a gentle temperament. Her daddy has been very solicitous with her lately, so we're hoping.... I posted her picture a week or so ago, and the jury is still out.
