What’s mud mallowing?

The quail scoop water out of the waterer with their beaks into the dirt when it’s hot outside. Then they wallow in the wet dirt like little feathered pigs. It’s a little different than dust bathing.
I’ve even started giving them a mister so they’ll stop scooping water.

My quail don't do that. They would if their sand pit was close enough to their water. But then their water would get dirty. Messy little birds

dirt bath: 4 weeks old.

I don't know if it matters, I've never had buttons.

Birds are very good at cleaning themselves if given dust/dirt. Try reading about quail dust baths and give them the opportunity to do it themselves. The smaller the bird, the more dangerous it is to force them to become wet. They have a tough time controlling their body temperature when this happens.
I personally find my quail do a great job bathing themselves in dust as soon as a few days after they hatch. Just make sure it is clean dust/dirt/sand.
