How old were you when you got your first dog?

My mom always had dogs when I was a kid. I got my first personal dog at 30 something. I don't have that dog anymore. I adopted my current dog a bit over a year ago. She's old, blind, and deaf. I call her my little old lady. When it's her time, I don't plan on getting another. I'm not a dog person.

I was 18 and living on my own. I had always, always wanted a dog and my mother hated them. Not too long after I was on my own, one of my uncle said every young woman living alone should have a big, black dog (he trained police dogs and studies have shown people are the most nervous around black dogs).

That sounded like the best idea ever, so off I went to the pound and fell hard for a GSDx pup, and I've never been without a dog since.

On my tenth birthday, one of my friends and her mum showed up to my party with a stray dog who had jumped into their car, they thought she might have been ours.
My parents weren't dog fans, so I'm grateful that they let us keep her. And paid for the vet to get her spayed, vaccinated, etc.

I have only had two years between Great Dane 1 and Great Dane 2 but I was 3 when we got Great Dane 2. Currently we are on our beautiful Great Dane 3 (Wilbur)

Think I was about 4 years old and my parents got 2 dogs, but they took them back. We were unable to keep them and I haven't owned a dog since =(

I was 9 when I got my first dog. I loved her so much. I still miss her.

I was 16. Two of my beloved chickens had been killed by a pine marten, so my brother said, "we need to get a dog or a gun"...so we voted for the dog. Not that she would be very effective against any predators, she's an absolute wimp and is actually scared of flies. But we love her.

Good call. Hard to snuggle with a gun, and really hard to train it to come when you whistle.
