My Coop
My Coop
Last night we had some coyotes howling on our property at 11:45, woke me up and scared me to death! Very haunting sound. Anyway, I flew out of bed with out even thinking about it and grabbed my kids bat and went out to the coop(even though it is locked up tight) to protect my pullets if need be. The coyotes weren't anywhere around the coop but I still felt the need to be there. What is the most extreme thing you've done to protect your chickens? I would love to hear your stories so I don't feel like an overprotective mom.

I hate the howling sound! As a kid I had a recuring dream of wolves attacking me at my grandma's house. I reality, I when I would spend the night, whenever I'd go outside, you could here the coyoties howling from one side of the property, to the other. And where the house is, there are 5 known packs that live within 10 miles of there. (In centeral Wisconsin)

I would NOT be going out to protect my chickens. My kids...YES! Without a doubt.

You are WAY braver than me!

I dont have a lot so put mine out during the day and crated on the enclosed back porch at night. I dont forsee doing that forever though....

Belive me, if I had been coherent, I probably wouldn't have gone out either. I realized how dumb it was when I thought about it later.

I live in the middle of a suburban neighborhood, but all of my neighbors have lost hens and pullets to raccoons lately. A LOT of birds.

I have a baby monitor set up next to my bed and a pair of shoes right by the back door...

naw a coyotee is scared of people our Boston Terrier who weighs like 30 pounds chased a HUGE one off our property. When we first moved in we were sitting watching tv and my dad says "Look!" and right there a big coyotee looking through the sliding glass door right there with his nose almost touching the glass. I think he saw our little dog.

The key word is typically. The coyotes around here have been getting more bold. A friend of mine said he was chased down a street by a few of them at around 3 in the morning. Still not sure if i believe that...

I have run out to the coop and run just by hearing the chickens squabbling...worried that my cat was trying to get in. In fact, I lost a baby chick that was hatched by a broody and accused my cat of the dirty deed. I was going to rehome her and then I found the chick two days later..dead in the run

Not sure why it died but it was completely intact.
