How protective are you?

The key word is typically. The coyotes around here have been getting more bold. A friend of mine said he was chased down a street by a few of them at around 3 in the morning. Still not sure if i believe that...

Oh, those three am coyotes are pink and only show up after several scotches.

But seriously coyotes, especially in a pack are very braizen. They are not that afraid of humans. Just saying "Shoo. Shoo. Shoo." Is not going to work. And they're bigger than a Boston Terrier. And have been known to carry rabies also.

My first predator was a racoon. I went out to open things up and the chickens were going crazy. I knew something was wrong. I opened the door to 2 dead chickens and the others trying to get out. In the corner the coon had one hen down. I flew into a rage and grabbed a 2x4 and began beating into the corner on the coon. Not sure I got it I grabbed a spade and went back into an attack. I heard it growl and this brought me to my senses. I got out of the coop. It stopped what it was doing and came near the door. I threw a rock at it and it took off the way it came in. I saw it go through the weeds but I'm not sure how much damage I did. I haven't seen anything since.

Those coyotes are brave. About 2 months ago, they were after the neighbors chickens that had taken refuge on my front porch. Long story short, heard a thud, chicken on floor, rushed out picked up chicken, heard the coyotes steadily closing in on me and chicken. Clapped, called out, stomped, dogs raising the roof in the house, nothing stopped them. Grabbed rifle and spotlight, they didn't even change direction till fired I fired a shot in the general direction. Then the one I had the light on "moseyed" across the yard, up the drive and down the road. (Couldn't hold the spotlight and get a good shot with the rifle at the same time. I'm good, but not that good) Little buggers, got a shotgun handy now just in case. HAve to say, Coyote is the only animal I've come across that didn't try to get away from me first. Spooky

We're all over protective moms and dads! Our coop is quite a ways from our house and the land is flat and very open. In the middle of the night during a windy thunderstorm I grabbed a flashlight and ran to the coop to make sure the windows in the coop were closed. My husband thinks I'm nuts and he's yelling 'if the hair on your arms stands up lay down on the ground because lightning is about to strike!'

Well the chickens looked at me like I was crazy. Of course they were fine. I was soaked to the skin and had to change my jammies and then couldn't sleep because I thought the chickens might be too hot with the windows closed.

This is going to be a great post to read. Lots of fun.

We've had racoon and owl attacks this summer. Luckily the weather has been cool so we are able to sleep with the windows open and I can hear my girls when they start skawking. I can't count the number of times I've been up at 3 am outside in my jammies trying making sure my chickens are not being killed. We have had the shotgun loaded and ready for weeks now. We have coyotes in the area, hear them howling all the time. So far though, none have bothered to venture into the yard or anywhere near the coop.

I'm new to chickens but know about coyotes and other critters. I have the top of my run covered now to keep the owls and hawks out. There are coyotes in the woods behind my house but I don't worry about them too much, I have a great dane and he marks the yard and that will keep them at bay. I've been concerned about other small animals though, we have a lot of opossum and I've seen fox, I have a Ruger 10/22 loaded and ready.
