How Rare are Double Yolks?

At the time when I had only 3 or 4 hens laying, I was getting double-yokers on a fairly regular basis. Don't know WHO was laying it, either one of the BO's or the 1 BR I have. got probably 7 of them over the course of a couple months, but none recently. It was nice to crack open 4 super-jumbo eggs & scramble the up; fed 2 of us quite nicely & the chickens got the leftovers!

One of my leghorns was a double yoking machine. I'd get 2 a week from her in her second and third month of laying. The largest topped out at 99.5 grams. The black star gave us about 4 doubles in total and BR 1. There were none in Febuary so am thinking they are tapped out, though eggs have gotten very consistent and larger over all now. The Black Star is truely a star there, 6- 75 to 80 gram eggs a week.

Read on another forum where you can put food coloring on their vents to figure out who is laying what egg. Ittransfers to the egg when laid. I would think you would have to have pretty docile hens.
