How smart are roosters?

I have a "B-type" personality rooster. He was the 3rd in line among the roosters, and is now the only rooster we have (the other 2 were too aggressive). He is low-key, very caring of his hens, quiet, and intuitive, if not smart. And it seems like he's now including humans under his caring wing.
Earlier this week, my son was home sick. He slept on the couch while I worked outside. I checked on him every 15 minutes, but he hadn't stirred. Then at one point, the rooster came up to me and flapped his wings, obviously trying to get my attention. It was unusual behavior for him to come so close. I went indoors and sure enough, my son had just gotten up. Most people I tell this story to think it's a coincidence. I'm thinking that it's not. Anyone else ever encounter this kind of behavior?

Mine gets pretty upset whenever our toddler cries - even if she's inside and he can barely hear her. He will start crowing and looking anxious and usually won't stop until I go out and tell him everything's OK. He also lets us know when they are out of water or food. He takes good care of his ladies!

Mine will crow when they're out of food too. I think he's a smart boy, but I'm kinda partial.

glassparman - Maybe 6 of one, half a dozen of the other?

I know that roos are certainly smart (or intuitive) enough to know when their caretakers are scared of them.

They have a special roosterly intelligence... but as far as I can tell, that's it! My roo is very good at detecting hawks and rounding up wandering hens, and finding tasty morsels in the grass. But he thinks I'm a different person when I wear sneakers instead of my usual muck boots! He has actually attacked me if I dare enter the coop wearing sneakers....

Was your son hollering to you or anything like that? Maybe he heard him? I personally wouldn't rule out coincidence.
One day my pigs were breaking out of their house. My roo was going nuts and I have learned to listen to him when he acts like that.

Hi Jenny, in answer to your question, he wasn't making any noise, but he may have turned a light on in the house. My guess is the rooster saw the light, or saw him walking around inside.
Thanks to everyone for all the input.

Thats funny pattycake cuz my roo doesnt like certain shoes of mine either. He tried to get me a couple time too. I think its funny
