How to address an issue....

Yes we have 1/2 acre but its only 80 feet wide. Long and narrow.... its a suburban subdivision. Even the woman that has been approved (on a 6-month probationary time) has 3/4 and still can't do it. Her's has been changed to allow it no closer than 30 feet. My current shed that has no issues now as a garden shed becomes an issue once animals/chickens are housed in it. But it is just 7 feet to the property line behind us (and no the neighbors behind us have no issues). I have no direct neighbors that care. 4 out of 5 that I've been able to talk to are just fine with this. While its a public hearing the ones that really matter the most are those that are within 300 feet of me. I don't expect it to be a major battle but want to be prepared hence the reason I was just asking some polite ways to address the concern without bringing out my sarcastic side. I really want to say 'screw you all I'll do what I want'. 'None of the 23 indoor birds are an issue so how the hell can 3 little hens kept outside be a concern'

I'm also trying to do this non-confrontational. One neighbor is one the zoning board so if I was to do it anyway.... I do have someone that may be more likely to say something (although on a personal level he has told me he doesn't care). He just has to follow is job as well. By not making this an ugly thing it won't immediately put a negative tone on anyone else that wants to try to do this. I'm the 2nd person in our village but I know my other direct neighbor wants to do this too. If I go and get nasty with the whole thing then the village is more likely to be watching out for stuff and shut down anyone else that tries. I also hurt the other person's probation. Now she is looking into also changing the zoning laws to include on the books specifically that its okay to keep a certain number of hens and house them.

We want to use the shed to keep us from building a 2nd solid structure to house the hens in during the winter. It will also provide a much more secure and safer place to keep the birds and keep out predators. They will have an enclosed moveable pen built that will allow them to be moved around the yard... and yes while I'm out back I'll let them out to wander a bit (but doing so unsupervised makes the village leary of allowing them).

Its all about making people feel what they have to say matters and making those in the office positions feel they did their job...make them feel important... then there's a lot less confrontation. Now... yes my feeling is screw what otehrs think... I deal with things they do and while I may not like it all I accept it as their right to do as they wish on the property they own and pay taxes on.

Oh no, I totally understand - now...

alot of info was left out regarding the lot configuration, so it makes perfect sense. I wouldnt want to tick my neighbors off if they were that close either; I was looking at the "we're on 1/2 an acre and pass all laws.." comment. There have been others that have been with all limits and still asked their neighbors "permission"..and the officials as well -and that I just dont understand at all. Thats where I thought you were coming from...

I wish you all the best in your endeavor. Given your fellow neighbor got permission to get birds, even temporarily, should help you in your battle to do so as well.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
