How to be less afraid of the dark?

Tonight was a success....I went out on my own with a flashlight and was repeating "i'm the scariest thing here!!" over and over while walking with really big/heavy/confident steps. Right after I latched the coop, the neighbor's door opened and I was back in the house before you could say 'startled'.

WOOOO!!!
GO BLACK CAT!!!
(you also cracked me up XD)

Hi @black_cat . I was wondering how you are doing. Are you doing better?

Do you have a rooster? Something that I did when I had a bantam rooster: I would crow, and wait for him to crow back. Sometimes I would have to crow a few times to wake him up. When he crowed back, I found it comforting, because a scared rooster won't make himself known by a loud crow.

I'm doing better- I've discovering that sheep are *quite terrifying* in the night time, so I"m able to be like 'at least there aren't scary sheep' which helps. Unfortunately I don't have a roo- I'd love one but I don't have the space, hens, neighbors, or parents for one.

Ok, I'm glad that you are doing better. :hugs

Step one.... no spooky suspense or horror movies after dark for a long while.... and
Step two.... sing! Sing loud and proud and even off key if you want.
A headlamp would also go a long way to help you. :)

Also, on nights when the moon's out in full force, take a few minutes with the light off and stand in one place.... specifically that spot that gives you the worst heebie jeebie feelings any other time.... and take in the beauty of everything around you. Silver moonlight softens those spooky shadows and gives you a chance to really discern what is what without a light. Can't quite make something out? Pop your light on just long enough to figure out what it is and then cut it back off. Listen for the soft rustle of animals in their beds..... especially the chickens. They'll "talk" to each other for a while after settling down. It's very calming. They live out there day in and day out so if they're relaxed you can just about bet that all is right in the world around them.

And lastly.... be proud! I know adults that are too shy to admit that they're terrified of the dark to this day.
