how to be secretive

I think I would be considering moving. Who needs neighbors like that. For the love of Pete, what harm can a hand full of hens cause.

i know someone who made a wierd fort thing out of fence panels but i think ill end up just fencing in a run around their little house and calling it good.

OOh, let me know what you come up with. I may have chicken deception in my future.

I'd be interested in what anyone has to say about landlords in cities OKing a very small flock, maybe just four hens. If you have a private yard and the pet policy is open, do you have to ask?

I may be talking to leasing agents and landlords soon, and i can't imagine getting a good response when i say "yes, the house is fine, but can i have CHICKENS?"

Gingerbeer, if your lease allows for pets, maybe you should start a little vague, like "Can I have pet birds"....for some reason, chickens being a 'farm animal' don't go over as well as a pet caged bird like a parrot. Sure, you can have a screaming, cussing, destructive, messy parrot, but a CHICKEN?! I don't think so! If birds are allowed, and your landlord wants to know more about it, then go from there. If you just say birds, and he/she doesn't care and doesn't ask details, I'd let it go at that. It depends on your landlord, but even if pets are allowed, they usually like to know what you have. First make sure the house is in a place that is allowed to have them though, because your landlord might not thank you for breaking the law on his property. He could get in trouble for it, even though they are your birds.

Seems like there's a bias in city ordinances against animals that provide you with any useful products. You can have two unwashed stinky big dogs pooping all over your yard and barking at everything, but think about getting a couple of nice milk goats...and you're in big trouble, even if they do not smell or make much noise! I've seen ordinances (in a rural town, no less!) that would not allow even a pet rabbit in the city limits, because a rabbit was a 'farm animal'. Hahaha if you want to say that, then dogs and cats must be farm animals too, because most farms have a lot of them around!

What i do is I just bribe my neighbors with a few eggs everyonce in awhile. Just say "hey i'm up to my arms in eggs and I was wondering if you'd like some. If you bring me back the carton, i'll be happy to give you some more later". Of course this advice only works if you have laying hens. Good luck!

Research which breeds you are going to get. Some are louder than others. My Black Australorps and White Leghorn pullets are VERY loud. Others vary in loundess. My RIR and Buff Orpington are very quiet. Thinking about, I have no idea how much noise some of them make, such as the Barred Rocks. They blend in with the flock and I have never noticed if they make any noise or not.

I live in the city limits too. When I use to have chicken they were free range , which I advise you to Not do, so one got into the front of our yard and my neighbor was having garge sale. Thank goodness my neighbor are very tolorate they did not do anything. I had a rooster and it crowed every morning. I sold my chickens but I plan on getting some Silkies this Spring! So please do not do what I did. Thanks! -Alex
