How to become a chicken breeder

I'm not a breeder but I do mix and match my breeds to try and narrow down the traits I want. I want big meaty birds that are good layers. So I started with 5 black astrolorp and mated them to a lavender orpington. Both breeds lay good and both are good size, but I was curious about a mix of the 2. See breeding can be a lot of fun and if there is something specific (egg production, meat size, broody, )you want to breed for you have to search high and low ,hatcheries, breeders, backyard flock owners, to find several birds of the same breed from different blood lines, but at the same time all carry the SOP.

SOP standard of perfection. Not all birds in a flock will meet all SOP so as you chose your birds chose them for their traits ,not just because they are silkies. I know nothing about them other than they are not great layers not meat birds. They are for the cute factor only. However if you work close with someone who knows chicken genetics you can develop a "silkie egg producer" or a "silkie meatie". Give my a day or 2 and I can find information for you to get in contact with the proper people . I will have lots of questions for you and hopefully even more answers. Ok. On another thread I'm on there are a few that deal in silkies so give me a bit and I will send them here to help.

Again, please take nothing personal we all love our birds and want you to enjoy you as much as we do ours. We will help as much as you let us.
 
Yes I love my birds if I had a place to go out there with them I would set out there and do my school work and if I see a hawk I am up and outside hearding them up to put them in there pen and I would love to learn more about them from a breeders perspective and or someone that owns a few
