sorry But I HAVE tried that!

I stick them in a wire bottom cage with no straw or bedding to stay warm on. plenty of feed and water but they dont like their bare chests/breasts exposed to cold temps and within a few days they tend to snap out of broodiness to keep warm and not spread out like a pancake.

AL you have peaked my curiosity as to your methods of breaking broodies..I dont judge and you dont skeer me!

can I know this little evil secret??

[email protected] :

im not sure if my chickens becoming broody or not i have 2 chickens laying and two that arent laying yet i have caught both of them sitting on their egg for a while after theyve layed a few times but i take the egg and coax them out of the house and they just go, but they dont try to go back in or get angry with me - should i worry about them becoming broody or is this normal?

Worry when the hen stays on the nest overnight. Not before. A broody hen will pull out her breast feathers (so she has skin contact with eggs), growl at anything that comes near and puff up.
I currently have 5 hens setting and two with chicks. Since I don't incubate, I love my broodies.

Whatever !!!!!! If it is done right it can be very very effective. I hate Ole wives tales they are almost allways wrong, so I tried this once and it worked perfect. So your great idea is to take a broody and put her alone seperated. ummmm sounds like what you do to encourage broodiness, your experience is showing.

We have an easter egger who has gone broody twice since she stared laying in January. The first time we broke her in three days by locking her out of the box. This time I let her be at night and locked her out periodically during the day so she would eat and drink and get some exercise -- 4 weeks today and she hasn't let up. So last night we locked her out of the boxes and haven't let her back in during the day today and we'll see how much longer it lasts. I don't mind her being broody so much, but she hasn't laid an egg in a month, the freeloader!
