In what ways can you improve egg color?
Only hatching the darkest eggs?
Using a dark eggshell bred rooster? ie: welsummer, marans
other?

The brown egg shell trait is a polygenic trait that span multiple loci, but at least two of them are sex linked(inhibitor and enhancer) so using a dark egger on your hens will not only improve as it usually do on the parent average but it will boost the color at least one shade more due to the sex linkage of some of those genes
