G'day guys I have a great line of big meaty Plymouths that also lay well I want to cross my hens with a Cornish or as we call them in Australia Indian game to get a faster growing meat bird I know you can by comercial cx chicks but for me that take the fun out of it any thoughts, tips would be greatly appreciated cheers cam

Hello
I am trying the same cross. But it will be very different. The industry has picked the fastest growing also the fastest feathering and the heaviest over many years and picked the top 20%. Of all these categories. And for me and you to do that. Is almost impossible.
But there are things. That we must try. And breeding some sort of backyard cornish cross. Is what are going for.
I have some White Rocks and Barred and large R I Reds. That I am breeding to a really nice Jubilee or off colored W L Red Cornish Cock. I had some others and a real nice White cock. With just a few black feathers. But he got very sick real quick. And I lost him. I think he was crop bound and I put a couple large needles of water down his throat. When I came back. He was very dark purple in the face and head. And was dead.
But back to you. If you select the way I have told you. You should do ok. And just go for it. And let us know....Thanks...NJNick

Cheers njnick will do that I'm a bit concerned about how slowly this current batch of rock pulleys developed so maybe I will cross them with a quicker roo first

Hello
You muat observe a good many numbers. Or juat use the few that you have. I do not know if any Cornish will do better then others.
I can say that I just got some more nice Barred Rock hens. And have put my best and onlt W L Red or Jubilee colored cockeral. With them. And will have to see.
I have been hatching those other eggs. The W L Red over White Rocks an Barred Rocks and the R I Reds. The biddies or chicks have hatched out feathered like the W L Reds like R I Reds and Black like Black Sex links or Austrolops. And even some that have the colors of the pure Barred Rocks. Also that smokey grey color. And the pure yellow.
I am hopeful that I have some biddies out of the very nice White Cockeral. That I lost.
Hope you do good. Keep me and the others posted on how you are doing.
I have many breeding projects. And not much work to pay for the feed. But it is a passion and hobby that I truely love. Have so many fowl from all over this country and the world.
I will try to upload pics.
