Depending upon his age and what else was happening at the time, he may be trying to dominate you.
I have a decent barred rock rooster about 2.5 years old. He does not bother me, I have backed him up too many times.
Just the same, all the hens were standing around the other day with him in the midst. I picked up one of the hens to put on a saddle. He took exception and spurred me on the hand. I can't blame him, he was protecting his girls. When I went to pick her up, she squawked. That must have set him off. If I had been smart, I would have made sure he or she were apart from the other and picked her up then.
I don't handle my chickens often, so her reaction was not unexpected.
I can feed them from my hand, but sometimes get pecked when they try to take the food from my hand.
