I have an Australorp pullet who has this weird tacky, hard gunk on her feathers on the right side of her head. I've tried to clean it off my using some warm water on a washcloth, but its not making any difference.

Is there something else I can use that will help wash it out that won't hurt her skin? It's a big patch right around her earlobe.

Could you use some baby shampoo, that way you wouldn't have to worry about it getting into her eyes......

For the wildlife affected by oil slicks, they use dawn dish washing liquid....Maybe you could try that, but carefully so it doesn't get into her eyes.....

What about using something like peanutbutter....that's what you use when gum gets into your hair......

Just a few ideas...

Could it be dried blood? Especially if u have roosters. They grab the neck when mating. One pulled a quarter size patch of feathers out of one of mine. If u think it might be blood use hydrogen peroxide to dissolve and clen it then apply some antibiotic ointment to it or blu coat.
