How to cull a chick?

depends, for health reasons-Should not be often unless your line of birds has bad genetics, if you show... type wise/color etc, OFTEN but best to sell those,

Now thats just cruel. Do people really kill chicks just because their color isn't perfect? Now I hate showing animals even more (its never made any sense to me).

I don't think I'd ever cull even if they are likely going to die. There;s still the chance they might make it.

the one and only time (so far ) I had to cull a pet chicken I used starter fluid.

She was already on her way out......I soaked a rag in starter fluid, placed that in a bucket that I had a air tight lid for, and then wrapped her in a baby blanket and put her in, put lig on tight, and walked away.
Came back about 15 min later, took her out and burried her.

Its hard to do....mine was like 5 months old....and I cried for days.

good luck

there are occasionally those people that kill their fowl just because of bad coloring or type BECAUSE they dont want people to get their bloodline and them having to show against them, however most people (even poultry showers) Dislike those people. most people sell them... And the point in showing your fowl is pretty much... so you can make owning chickens even more fun, sure having them is fun... but theres nothing like breeding your fowl, taking care of them.. and then taking them into the poultry show and getting best (or close) out of hundreds-thousands of birds, plus if its a show with entry fee... extra cash for feed. some shows ( i hear..) even give out gifts (feed coupons, health care etc) to winners, personally i like breeding them to be "The best", that is FUN with so much competition out there these days

Thanks for explaining, I've always wondered why people show.

I know there is a tool you can buy that clamps around the neck and is used like scissors (I think) but instead of removing the head, breaks the neck, leaving the head on and no bloody mess. Seems easier than most methods to me. You could put it around the neck, look away, then clamp down.

WITHOUT pulling the head off. I've had to do it once and its just a quick jerking action and its done.

I did it once when my dog mauled one of my 3 day old chicks. He was alive but suffering. I just took the non-business end of my hammer and gave him one quick strike. Quick, easy, relatively painless. I think suffocation would be much more cruel.
