How to cure anemia in a chicken? HELP!

If she has a heavy worm load, this certainly could be her problem ..

Take a fresh sample to any vet to do a fecal float test, and they can do a parasite count , this way it would be an minimal expense, and you would know if it is even necessary...

Generally it is accepted that it's not IF chickens have worms, but how many....

Alright i will take her off corn he loves it:( best for her though.

Thanks for checking about the spinach

and i guess i better

start looking for a poultry poop vet person! i have a frozen pumpkin

in the other chickens' pen but the seeds are really big. Can she

swallow them? They're as wide as a thumbnail.

Thanks for the advice!

No problem eating pumpkin seeds as long as she has access to grit. People put pumpkins with the guts and seeds out for their birds all the time and the seeds usually go first. I'm assuming, since you are feeding Layena, that she's not a little chick.

my chickens must really be spoiled because I put out pumpkin seeds for them they wouldn't touch them so I thought they are too big so the next time I ground them just a little still wouldn't eat them so I ended up eating them myself, guess I don't have any worms now

are the lice gone yet? ( i see you said youve treated her again today?) shes not going to show any improvement until she is rid of them, could you have red blood mites in her house? they could be sucking her dry cauising anemia

give plenty of high protein foods to get her strength (and weight) back up...scrambled egg or crushed hard boiled eggs always go down a treat

in regards to the worming, if you really think she has worms too, id go ahead and de worm her, skinny or not, once these pests are gone she'll perk up

Poultry lice do not take blood meals. She could have worms, perhaps cocci or even mareks.

I would worm and treat for cocci for a week; if she is still sick I would mix some red cell in her water.

Mites do cause anemia...if you look closely at them they are normally white/clear, but when they have eaten, they are an orange like color--filled with blood! I would give her red cell. I use it for my goats and have had anemic chickens in the past and the red cell does the trick! You can give her 1/2 cc 2x a day for about 5-7 days and you should notice improvement! I would absolutely make sure she is wormed and de-loused--I would give her an oral wormer--tractor supply carries this in paste form(made for cattle), but works fine on poultry. I like Ivermec paste--just one dab on your finger does the trick. Then, I would dust her thoroughly in poultry dust or Sevin 5%. I would scramble up eggs and plain yogurt for protein. Good luck!

O what I wish I knew before my poor girl!

I have had her comfortable, warm and fed

for three weeks and NOW I know what I

should have done immediately:

Wormer
Sevin Dust
Red Cell
Poop Check
High Protein Diet

I am going to be gone for six days and I don't

know what to do

She has two more days

in my care and then its MEN

I can just pray

Thanks for the great advice

PS: She still can't stand. Is that normal for an anemic chicken? Is it something else?
