I have a 3 yo and two cockerels for 26 hens and 3 pullets
My 3yo is a good rooster. Takes good care of the flock
One of the cockerels hatched last June is a black Orpington. Before I got the 3yo I didn’t have any roosters so I bought three eggs for my broody, which are the black Orpingtons, love hatching my own chicks, then decided to get the rooster The BO is a beautiful bird but has a few issues. He moves his head side to side at times, his cockadoodledoo sounds more like a fog horn and he seems to be on scaredy cat side. But I really don’t want to get rid of him
And the second cockerels was hatched July of last year. He seems like he is learning well from the 3 yo, which is his dad.
First.
How long do you use a rooster mating with his hatched chickens? Does that cause problems in chicks as years go by?
My hens are getting pretty beat up by the roosters. Can you isolate the roosters for an extended periods of time and I’m thinking 6 months of the year?
Can you rent a rooster for 6 months? Kidding
Thanks
Connie
