How to Deal with a Neighbor

I was working a jobsite out of state and the local engineer told me this story of his neighbors barking dog. We were working 12 hour nightshifts, 6 days a week and this engineer mentioned that his neighbors, an elderly couple had a yappy dog that barked all day long while they were out. It never bothered him before when he was working days, but trying to sleep in the day while working nights, this dog was really getting to him and being somewhat friendly with them he didn't want to do anything violent. Another technician spoke up and said that cold medicine will make a dog sleep. That very morning after work the engineer stopped and bought a package of cold capsules. While he was making his after work meal prior to sleeping, he mixed two capsules with peanut butter formed into a ball and tossed it over the fence. He said he saw the yappy dog in his doghouse with it's nose sticking out, started to twitch, then came out sniffing and found the loaded peanut butter ball and ate it. After his shower, headed to bed, the engineer looked out and saw the yappy dog laying out in the middle of the yard in full sun looking dead!!!!!!!. Oh crap, but he went to sleep and slept soundly. That evening, waking up and headed to work, he saw the dog-----alive. Great, so it became a routine for several weeks, each morning after work, tossing a "sleepytime" dose over the fence. After several weeks the engineer came in telling this story that on his day off, he was puttering around in his yard when his elderly neighbor came up to the fence to chat. During the conversation the neighbor mentioned he was going to have to take his dog to the Vet. "Oh Crap", "Why?" Seems something is wrong with my dog, he's up all night barking keeping us awake. (I don't know how the engineer kept a straight face)

Wow. How anyone could think that someone giving a potentially lethal or dangerous (Acetominiphin and ibuprophin, commonly found in cold medicine is toxic to dogs) drug to someones pet day in and day out is funny....I don't have much hope for the world. And before someone brings it up, NO I don't think the excessive barking entitles people to endanger someones pet, poison thier pet, injure thier pet, etc. or do whatever they want - we don't live in an a "thit for tat" society. If we did, it would be more mahem than it already is - with people rationalizing thier bad behavior and coming up with reasons that they can circumvent the laws and commit crimes. Animal cruelty laws exist for a reason.

Funny or not, I was reporting a story the engineer claimed factual. I make no judgements myself on his actions. (however the whole crew was rotfl at the punchline)

The event is in the past, was anecdotal, third or possibly fourth party, and no amount of indignation or outrage can un-ring that bell.

Thank you for your opinion. Remember there really doesn't need to be any morality attached to different folks' necessity to deal with predation, and other folks may have some ideas useful for the OP, even if they don't meet with approval from some. Pick and choose, pick and choose, whichever method best fits in one's own situation.

Plus the fact that it probably never really happened but was a funny story and i am glad you shared it with us because after putting up my second strand of electrified fence after work, i am tired and needed a good laugh. When someone tells a joke that starts with a guy walks into a bar we dont point out that public intoxication is wrong and the world will end if we laugh at the joke. Lets just chill and have a good time and be friends. If we need someone to be mad at lets make it me because I'm the mailman and i delivered thousands of bills to my customers of which you could be one. Its ok, even my grandmother gets mad at me when her check is late and I dont even deliver her mail.

Yeah, dark matter, thanks for sharing that story for all of us who have suffered with little yappy dogs as neighbors -- DH and I were also ROTFL.

I didnt mean to imply that dark matter wasnt telling the truth btw. Actually he seems to be an honest guy with great stories and good advice and hope he keeps them coming. I was actually implying that the guy who told him could have stretched the truth a tad as construction and engineering guys are known to do, but if dm says its legit, then i believe it.
