How to Deal with a Neighbor

Most of my neighbors have been really great about their dogs. Where I used to live my whole place was fenced and we had two large dogs for protection. However, once in a while one would get in, that nobody wanted to claim or take responsibility for. If it didn't do anything serious, it was my paintball gun that would teach it to never come back. If it harrassed or attacked any of my livestock, my .22, 20 ga, or 12 ga made sure it didn't come back. Harsh, yeah, but my state has a leash law. Animals were to be on leads or behind a fence. If they were outside and got hit by a car or killed because they were where they shouldn't be, tough. People should respect animals enough to take care of them. I have no sympathy for anyone who disregards other peoples rights. I feel far worse for that animal if i have to do something. Unfortunately, it's part of having livestock.

This has been a really interesting (and funny) thread about protecting our livestock when sometimes neighbors can have a care less attitude about where their dogs run or what harm they cause.

A sheep farmer on the next road told us he approaches each new neighbor as they move in telling them he raises sheep as his sole livelihood and that if he sees their dog on his property he will shoot and ask questions later. An elderly couple moved in down the road and had a poodle and said their dog would never do that and he needn't worry. A few weeks later he saw the harmless poodle running his ewes in the field terrorizing them. They run & that makes it fun for the dog and can cause them if pregnant to lose their lambs. He shot the poodle and buried it. When the neighbors went canvassing asking if anyone had seen their poodle our sheep farmer neighbor "hadn't seen him". He figured he had given them fair warning which they elected to ignore. Life is hard sometimes but when you give people fair warning and they don't take your advice or their pet's life seriously then they have only themselves to blame.

It can be frustrating if neighbors do not control their dogs - and I agree animal control can sometimes be very lax especially in rural neighborhoods to respond. I like the paint ball and the stinky skunk perfume as a good alternative, haha.

Thank you for your opinion. Remember there really doesn't need to be any morality attached to different folks' necessity to deal with predation, and other folks may have some ideas useful for the OP, even if they don't meet with approval from some. Pick and choose, pick and choose, whichever method best fits in one's own situation.

I was just pointing out that it is a crime and animal cruelty to poison a dog - and a barking dog problem is not a predator problem, so yeah I can attach morality to that situation. Like you said, its my opinion. The story is funny at the end, but the situation in front of it, if true is really apalling to me.
