How to deal with rogue dogs and their owners

I asked my township police chief ...if a Dog comes onto your property you have a legal right to protect your livestock...I don't know about where you live I asked here...I have dogs I love dogs...I don't want to hurt anyone's dogs...that dog came back last week hunting my ducks on my property...I dispatched a.357 into the ground to scare it because I don't want to hurt it. But I don't want more dead ducks....leash laws on my sides also..My wife cried for two days after the last ducks got killed needlessly.

Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay in responses. My two New Hamp Reds seem to be doing ok. Their tail feathers have started to regrow. It's been a week and we haven't seen the dogs, nor heard from animal control. I will be making a call tomorrow and asking for more info on the laws regarding putting animals down that invade my property. It's comforting to know that we aren't alone in these situations. But, I also have to stress, my wife and I have a few young children that are outside at different parts of the day. That, of course, is our number one concern. Thanks again for your insight and support.

Glad to hear things have settled down for you. My ducks don't leave the yard so they were for basically"sitting ducks". I will continue to shoot of rounds into the ground if need be to scare this dog. But it I have to I will kill it to save my ducks. But as I say I asked the police chief my options first. And he said I had the right to defend against predation. I would rather scare this dog away though as I'm friends with the owner.
Your best bet though would be to ask first...that way you know for sure how the local law works for you.
