northern Missouri Winters are Cold! These domestic doves were living in a cage South of downtown Kansas City, MO where they overwintered outside before. Right now they are staying at a farm (and free flying during the day!). A few of them will come to live at my house when I get their cage built. My dad is designing a 4 X 8 foot cage for them. I am very familiar with bird caging due to past volunteer work with injured birds. I was going to have a wooden box for them to go in during the Winter with a small door, like my chickens have for their night time roost. However my Dad brought up a good point, which is we don't know if the doves would go inside a dark box. However it could get as cold as zero and they will need to be protected...Any ideas or knowledge about how to build the Winter night time area inside the 4 X 8 aviary is very welcome. Thank you!
