How to determine Fair Market Value for a rare breed egg-laying pullet?

I had a dog get in and kill one of my Delaware pullets the day before Thanksgiving. Caught the dog in the act and held him until Sunday(don't even get me started on this one!) for the dog warden to come get him.

Anyway, they want a Fair Market Value for my Delaware hen.

Anyone know how/where to get that? It's not like I can just run down to the store and get one, ya know?

Most people set the price of a laying hen at $50 if they are taken by a dog. Some ask less, some ask more, I like asking $50, seems to be good middle ground.

The dog warden wanted an official amount....I've already told him what I thought it was worth...but he wants more than that.

If you want fair market value:

Add up:
Cost of feed until that age
Loss of egg-laying and egg sales from that hen over a period of 3 years
Why not throw in loss of offspring from that hen?
Loss of prize money if/when you would have shown her.


Tack on as much as you want, but make sure it ads up to a "set" number in your head. Personally I think $50 is justified.

Don't forget to add the cost of shipping (or fuel for travel) if you can't find a fairly local breeder.

Dh was googling this weekend, and I've been searching for awhile now and can't find anyone selling a ready-to-lay Delaware hen.

She was around 20 weeks or so. Ready to start laying anytime.

I know it would be underhanded, but you could put up an auctions on eggbid offering her for sale, see how high the bidding goes, then cancel the auction before it completes. Not against the rules, just very annoying to the bidders. Let the open market say how much she sells for. Put in "free shipping" also, as you are just establishing the value of the bird, not the bird plus shipping. Then just add $60-75 for shipping and the box.
