how to dub a chicken?

I'm getting older so my physical body may not be able to do the things it did when i was younger but I will be darn if my mind is just going to go away cause I'm not taking care of it. Even if i get Alzheimers....I'll go down having learned! Besides what fun to annoy the kids and grandkids with random "Cliff Clavin" moments at the table at the restaurant whilst a good looking waiter/waitress stands there.
The best section of this site to constantly read is this section...You can learn SO much about different diseases, illnesses.....treatments that people try that don't work vs what does work.
It's wonderful!

Soooooooo, @thatdude, went and read up on dubbing and forgot to get back to you. Totally shocked me. Could not believe people do that to birds in this day and age. I get doing it if you were fighting them (though fighting any animals is not anything I'd do, much less watch), but the article I read said it was really for that reason only and that the organizations require it when showing. It's like cutting a girls hair, ears and lips before she goes into a beauty contest :he. Truly made me sad, but now because of you I have more knowledge and so I thank you again.....good luck with showing your Old English Bantam.....:)

Games also tend to have big combs and wattles which can make them more prone to frost bite. So, it's not ENTIRELY a looks thing, but mostly is. No worse than cropping ears or docking tails on a dog or getting a little girls ears pierced when she's a baby. I've seen videos of people dubbing cockerels and they honestly seem more bothered by the blood dripping and being held than the actual cutting, probably not something that I would do to my birds, but, not super cruel either.

Hadn't thought of the dog thing...but I don't do that either. Not sure I'd compare it to a little girl getting her ears pierced.....she still has her ears. Poking a tiny hole and cutting off body parts are two different things to me. Now you brought up frostbite and I hadn't thought of that but I know you can use vaseline or something to help chickens who get frostbit. Still, I went and learned and I now know what dubbing is. I'd rather know then not know.....:)

ive been reading up about some rules but it is hard for me to find. is it true the is a cock is a certain age then you dont have to dub? because if so then ill definitely breed for that age i really dont want to dub. i might even try entering a bird and hope the 4h juge isnt a game expert or he decides just not to disqualify me.
