How do you encourage a pullet to drink more during the heat?
Our young Red Cochin Bantam named Rusty #2 hasn't been drinking a lot of water even though there are 2 waterers outside. One is a 5 gallon and the other is a 1 gallon.

I had to bring her and our cockerel inside to be watched. Our cockerel was brought in to keep her company since he's attached to her. They have a small chick waterer as that was small enough to fit in the cage with them to give them walking room.

I only noticed that Mr Frizz is drinking water while Rusty #2 only eats but doesn't drink.

Thanks in advance!

Keep the water clean and cool it with ice. Give them frozen treats like grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, watermelon, and/or ice cubes with treats inside. Show them the waterer - sometimes it makes them remember they're thirsty. I feed fermented feed, which provides a fair amount of water. If you're using ACV in the water, provide a waterer without ACV.

Maybe give them a big container to drink out of, such as a large dog bowl? Mine love to see a large container of water and always stop to get a drink. On hot days, they like this 'pool' in the shade, which I refill daily.

I have been giving them a wet mash made with cold water and feed on hot days as a early afternoon treat. A quarter cup of dry feed per hen, made very wet. 20180705_135526.jpg . The colder it is the better they like it on ninety degree days.
They love it. GC

If they get thirsty enough, they will eventually drink. I wouldn't be worried.

In my opinion I wouldnt just let them drink when there thirsty because even if they are thirsty they won't drink enough water if the water isn't cool. And if they do drink warm water in this heat it will just raise their body temperature and could potentially cause heat stress. make sure her water is always cold and you can use ice cubes like mentioned above in an earlier post. Also if you still notice they are not drinking enough you could maybe try feeding them treats that have a high amount of water in it like watermelon, tomatoes, and any other water based treat thats okay for a chicken. Sorry if I repeated something of an earlier post. Im not trying to parrot.
