It is largely indigestible by humans, and the caloric make-up is mostly carbohydrates. This is why people say that corn is a "fatty" food; carbs translate to "fat" in the diet world.
Cracked corn doesn't go straight thru steer like whole corn does. That isn't as much of an issue with birds. I imagine whole versus cracked is mostly a personal preference.
