How to feed cracked corn

Cracked Corn is absolutely NOT high in fat. It is largely indigestible by humans, and the caloric make-up is mostly carbohydrates. This is why people say that corn is a "fatty" food; carbs translate to "fat" in the diet world.

Cracked corn doesn't go straight thru steer like whole corn does. That isn't as much of an issue with birds. I imagine whole versus cracked is mostly a personal preference.

Even if corn contained fat, that isn't an entirely bad thing. Fats are essential to health. Brains rely upon fat, because they are literally MADE OF FAT.

The *type* of fat is what determines if something is healthy. The type of fat in corn wouldn't be of the unhealthy type. Eating corn certainly isn't akin to a double bacon cheeseburger.

As said: Carbohydrates to keep the birds warm during a cold winter night. Not the main food, just some additional calories for dark cold nights.

Yes. Exactly. We give our flock one scoop a night for that precise reason. They get grass in the evening spring and summer, corn when the weather turns. It’s already down in the mid-40s at night here.

I’m currently getting 9 eggs a day. We had a drop in production (down to 5) when we ran out of corn for a bit. The birds were crankier and descended upon feed like wolves morning and evening without the corn. I’m certainly convinced that augmenting with corn is healthy.

Birds have a gizzards that allow them to get more out of corn (and other grains) than humans do. I don't have a gizzard, do you?
That's exactly why birds need small rocks to swallow aka grit. - We have teeth instead.
However, cracked corn has the tough outer shell of the dry corn grain cracked so that the nutritious inside is easier to reach. Steamrolled corn is even easier to digest.
