We are starting to ferment our feed (the first batch will be done tomorrow) and I'm wondering how I'm supposed to feed my 7 chickens with it. Do I feed them meals, like once in the morning and once in the evening, or do I just give them food in the morning and leave it sit out there and give them enough for them to eat all of it in 1 day? I don't know long it would take it to mold so I want to make sure what I do is safe.

It will take some time to figure out how much they will eat without waste. I feed in the morning when I let them out. They free range all day, but their bowls are generally empty within an hour or two. I feed again in the evening when I want them to come back in. Any food left over after a meal just means I feed a little less the next time.

For the first time, I would try 1/4 cup of dry feed per bird before adding water and see how much your chickens eat. Alter measurements accordingly. I like to ferment and also keep a feeder with dry feed as well. Good luck!

I feed 18 chickens what I think they will eat in a day, along with the dry feed that is available to them. I usually give them about 4 cups(I don't measure). If they don't eat all of it that day, it's usually gone when I get out there the next morning. If not I put the old on top of the new and don't give as much.

If your birds free range, and you have time to check after an hour, you'll probably get a better sense then of how much they will eat; I have found any leftovers quite quickly get consumed by the local wildlife. Indeed, some cheeky robins are typically waiting at the feeding station before I let the hens out!
