Yup turning it upside down before first use helps get the heavy stuff up to the surface. Stirring by hand does work, but it takes a LOT of stirring... my husband and I took turns stirring (using a wooden sign stake) for about 15 minutes before it using it.

Oh, I'm glad to know it can be done by hand! I used to use my parent's workshop when I needed tools, but my dad's in his 80s now, and they sold a lot of the tools/equipment in a recent move. I have basic tools and an electric drill but not much else, I'm sad to say.
