How to get a rooster not to breed hens

You can still eat the fertile eggs. Chicks will hatch if you incubate the eggs or let the broodies hatch them.
You will need to keep the rooster separate from the flock 24/7 but chickens aren’t healthy being by themselves.
i didn't know that ty!

To my knowledge, its a rooster instictual duty to mate and look after the flock. The only way you will get the chicks is if you have a broody hen sit on the eggs or you incubate the eggs (for 21 days). There is no problem with eating fresh fertile eggs.. Otherwise you might want to look for another flock guardian.like a goose... But those can be loud and I don't have much experience with them to say otherwise.
Since the rooster wound need to be with the ladies in order to protect them yet he can’t be with them because he would breed with them, a better option would be to not get the rooster but maybe a guard dog.
Ty for your replies ill probably have to get a dog lol thanks for the help!!

A rooster will breed with the hens. That's his main job in life.

Why do you mind this? Fertile eggs are perfectly edible -- you won't even know the difference.

Eggs will not develop into chicks unless you incubate them either in an incubator or under a broody hen.

A dog is not an automatic solution to the desire for a flock guardian. In fact, any given dog is more likely to kill and eat the chickens than to protect them.

I second this.

We eat fertile eggs all the time. Its just a regular egg in all reality unless it gets incubated. I've read numerous stories on dogs and chickens and its just a tough thing to do. We tried training our own dogs as pups. For a time they were fine but as they got older, instinct took them to killing a number of our pullets behind our back..
Whatever you decide to do, wish you luck!

(Personally, I looove roosters. 😊)

This. If you get a dog, you have, MINIMUM, a year and a half of training before it knows it's job. And you will lose a chicken during the process, nearly guaranteed

Also, what do your chickens need protecting from? What predator problem are you having that you think a rooster or dog will fix? Because most "flock guardians" are elephant deterrent systems.
"But there aren't any elephants around here!"
"See?? It's working..."

Ty for your reply i think I'll have to get a dog instead
I'm getting a llama! Haha!

Often, a hen will step up and be the "look out." FWIW, I have a rooster. He mates with my hens. Sometimes I'm sure the eggs are fertile. I collect them daily, so I never know. And the only time they actually develop is if one of my hens goes broody and sets on them. That doesn't happen very often, so most of the eggs that do get fertilized never develop at all.

Can I ask why you don't want fertile eggs? Genuine question.
