OK so were newbies and we have lots of chickens and 6 ducks. The chickens are fine (for the moment) but we lost a duck last night. Our ducks are out in a dog run that we have secuired all of the chain link to the poles that support it all the way around the top and bottom and then added chicken wire over the top to deture flying predators. Well last night I heard the ducks going crazy and flashed our big light out side and I heard the chain link rattle (I didn't see him just heard him take off) well I went out and saw one of the mallardd flopping around in the pen. Thankfully the fox didn't get in but the ducks must have been sleeping against the side of the pen (yes they have a house but they don't use it.. Err.. ) and he had to of grabed him through the fence. There was a tuff of the ducks neck on the outside of the pen and the duck had his neck torn open and broken. It looks like the fox was attempting to pull him through the fence. Besides putting up mesh wire around the sides of the pen how can I get rid of the Fix as I don't want my chickens to be next and really don't want it to figure out another way into the ducks pen.

Looks like your only options would be trapping or shooting it at this point. It knows where the food is and will be back for more.

a Number 1.5 OR 1.75 coil spring trap google dirt hole set or flat set if it is a grey fox they are fairly easy to catch red fox are only a little harder to catch being they are used to your smell at the coop they should be very easy to catch a .22 short to the head does the job quickly. good luck

If you didn't see it, are you sure it was a fox? Reaching in and trying to pull it through the fence sounds like a racoon.

You could trap ,shoot or kill whatever but that wont solve your problem. if the fox cant reach in so can a racoon or anything else. I would sugguest a an electric wire. I have a fence charger I used to keep my Jack Russell Terriers from digging out under our fence and the fence charger was very effective. I would say if you have space around the fence run a charged wires aound the perimeter about 6" off the ground. If anything tries to get close to the fence and touched that wire, it wont be back I doubt. You may have to experiment with the hight off the ground to make sure you zap them before they get close. a fence charger is cheap and effective. You can put it on a timer to only come on at night and then offf during the day so you dont get zapped too.
