How to get rid of a possum?

I don't leave feed out at night. They lay in the afternoon. He kills the chickens eats the innereds and leaves. Leaving meat will attract cats, electifying will hurt my dogs. I caught the possum in the coop in the middle of murdering my Cochin, So I know he's not scavenging.
Loosing birds to opossums is something many, including myself, can relate to and dealing with problem is quick. I have electrified fencing, dogs and cats as well as electrified fencing. Everybody quickly learns their way around the fencing so that means the fencing is still an option relative to those animals. Baiting the live-trap with anything including meat may catch a cat or two but they quickly learn to avoid the trap while the opossum will not be so smart. Consider baiting trap with cat food. The opossum will be more into that than will be the cats if like mine.

What are you dogs doing during all of this? Maybe you should let them have a go at the opossum. My dogs destroy opossums and much tougher raccoons.

I have American Bulldogs, they're just a bunch of pansey's. They're just as scared of the Possums as me. When we move I'm debating getting a LGD for the goats, rabbits and poultry.

If you don't want it dead you could trap it. You can probably get a trap from the humane society. Of course they want a fee for the rental.

Please don't trap and relocate; the possum will have a very hard time in a new location, and he knows about traps and chickens, so if he survives at all he'll be someone else's chicken predator, and much more difficult to trap. Also, relocating certain wildlife is illegal in many areas, for very good reasons. Trap and shoot is the best plan. mary
