He's my neighbor's problem now. He's returned a few times but I think he's gone for good, and as for Opossums don't dig I watched him dig when he was in my coop. He just can't did well.

My dog went after him late last night. She never barks unless there's something going on. Hopefully he has learned. We have these things all around too. We had a HUGE cat who liked to fight with anything in sight,(other cats, birds, butterflies, raccoons, my feet) but even HE won't mess with one of those things. I think the balloon sounds like a good idea if you have a lot of them. Put them partially buried in the soil where ever he's digging. If that doesn't work, try tobasco sauce or, if you're really feeling devious, pepper spray is essentially cayenne pepper in vinegar. Just keep the stuff out of reach of the hens as I'm sure they'd find a way to get into trouble with it. You might even end up with some pretty spicy eggs! If all else fails, put a brick over wherever he's digging.
And is still a BAD idea to shoot in a residential neighborhood. Safety is an issue here. Those things can travel a long way, if the shooter should miss. They can also ricochet and cause more problems!.22 short makes little noise...
