Hi There
I am new to owning chickens. I recently purchased some wyandotte and plymouth rocks roughly three weeks ago. The eldest bird i have is a rooster who is about 4.5 months old and the rest of the chickens are about 3 months old. They live in a chicken run with a chicken coop inside the run for them to go in at night.
My concern since having them is that the rooster is being attacked by mosquitoes at night. I first noticed some dried blood on his comb and wattles on the third night and since then, they have turned into black scabs and more have appeared. Today i have noticed that some of my hens have possibly been bitten also as some of them have a lump or scab near there eyes.
Is there anything that i could use inside the chicken coop to help deter mosquitoes from coming in and biting my chickens?? I have heard of avian insect liquidator (ready to use) spray but not sure if it is strong enough to ward off mosquitoes.
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what i could use for the scabs on my chickens. I have my rooster on oxytetracycline at the moment as his eyes were weepy and i am also use a skin/ eye ointment to protect his eyes also....
I would really appreciate any advice anyone may have with this as my roosters comb and wattle is never going to heal if he keeps getting bitten every night.
thanks
