Thanks for all the replies, seems like there's no single way

How about using something similar to keep water from freezing outside - does anyone use light bulbs, ceramic bulbs or even heat mats all winter?

cmom,
How does he use it? Does it suspend over the babies?

I'm looking for alternatives to light bulbs. There is a thread over in quail I will try and find today, that talks about the fact that light bulbs are going to start being fazed out in 2012 and no long manufactured.

Plus they worry me with all the shavings.

I bought a bunch of incandescent bulbs of different wattages as many stores are already starting to phase them out.

No, he has it just sitting on the floor in his barn. He has a coop but the chickens won't use it, they prefer the barn.

The ceramic bulb is a heat emitter. It actually puts out more heat than a light bulb.

Can you rig up a dimmer switch with the ceramic bulbs to regulat heat output?
