How to heat the brooder?

How about using something similar to keep water from freezing outside - does anyone use light bulbs, ceramic bulbs or even heat mats all winter?

My brother uses a heater base that goes under the galvy waterers.

I'm looking for alternatives to light bulbs. There is a thread over in quail I will try and find today, that talks about the fact that light bulbs are going to start being fazed out in 2012 and no long manufactured.

Plus they worry me with all the shavings.

I have two brooders; in one I use the red heat lamp and in the other I have the EcoGlow heater.

I like them both.

I bought a bunch of incandescent bulbs of different wattages as many stores are already starting to phase them out.

Can you rig up a dimmer switch with the ceramic bulbs to regulat heat output?
