I have a silkie hen who is a 1 year 3 months old. I think she might have sour crop (or something similar?!) and nothing I am doing is helping.

I have tried:

- Keeping her on small portions of soaked pellets ONLY, distributed throughout the day.
- Adding turmeric and cinnamon to the soaked pellets (turmeric for inflammation, cinnamon as an anti fungal)
- Massaging her crop
- Only feeding soft foods
- Keeping her off food almost the entire day
- Feeding greek yoghurt
- Removing all food from the coop at night
- Half a pea sized amount of solid coconut oil (helped on round one, not since)
- Keeping her off of the grass and only on the patio for days
- ACV in the water

It DID resolve at first, but I think I let her back onto hard pellets too soon and it came back.

She seems normal in herself except she vomits sometimes when picked up wrong, and she does weird neck movements where she is trying to adjust herself.

Otherwise she's happily pottering around the garden, eating, drinking, pooping, talking... but I am starting to worry because this has been going on for weeks now and clearly isn't resolving.

Has anyone got any magic tricks or advice? Thank you in advance!!

Sour Crop is usually a yeast or fungal infection. Treating as such may be helpful. Unfortunately, ACV and spices may not completely resolve the problem.
An antifugal medication like Nystatin, Miconazole or Clotrimazole can be more helpful. See if you can get one of those. Treatment is listed in the article below.

Do keep in mind that often crop issues are a Symptom of an underlying condition, so do consider your hen's overall health and her production record. A few common underlying conditions are infection, reproductive disorders, worms and/or coccidiosis. Getting a fecal float from your vet will help rule out worms and coccidiosis.

Thanks so much! I had no idea that sour crop was a symptom of an underlying condition! Is there anything specific I should watch out for?

They are just backyard hens and I only have 4. Their coop is cleaned out every day, fresh water every day, food for the day etc...They are wormed etc. Although I did catch an early stage of feather mites on her recently and treated everyone thoroughly.

None of the others are unwell, at least not that I can tell! I pamper them way too much LOL so any indication of what to look for would be so appreciated!

I am off to read the article now! Thanks so much!
