I had about a doz mature hens with a few roosters in my flock. I waited until night time and put in about a doz hens that are about half grown. I made sure I opened the coop early the next morning and my chicken yard is huge. I never had a bit of trouble, it was like they had lived together all their very short lives. I know I'm probably lucky but I think the size of my chicken yard is a big key. My coop should be bigger but I will work on that in time. Right now there are enough places that they could all perch but most of the young birds are still sleeping in a pile on the ground. My two Sebastopol geese squeeze in for space on the floor as well. Consuming floor space additionally, I have some dog crates that hens and chicks are occupying as well.
